Revamping the clinic appointment into a spectacle that mirrors the bewildering reality, “Illusions of the ailing mind” is a mixed-media render of the systems of consciousness navigating the pleasure and pain of existence. Last words bleed out of feeding bags as objects and images of twisted desires open the portal into the Interworld, medicated for amputation. The digital video summons the chaos of the spectacle, mediating a site of transgressive exploration into the illness of society and man.

The trend cycle harkens back to the early 2010s, where fanatical dorkiness was applauded and the rivalry of Emo VS Swag beset the Internet. Can we go back to these simpler times? In Janice Kei’s “Deus ex machina“(God from the machine), One Direction CDs, moustache necklaces and kitschy collages converse and dither in generational nostalgia. The #corecore video memoir steer these relics to the olden days of Tumblr’s reign over its loyal subjects. These halcyon days initiated the unified diversification of culture and community, while simultaneously constraining them through the circulation of subversive memes and monotonous beauty standards. The emergence of micro-trends confined by uniform archetypes, morphed into the now inexhaustible catalogue of buyable #core identities: these years birthed the internet zeitgeist as it was by the end of the decade, and continue to be. Social media’s demise is not imminent, and a rejuvenation as transformative as that of the 2010s would unlikely recur. But were those really simper times, or are we simply blinded by the allure of escapism in this age of distraction?

A replica of infancy lays here - a dimension meant to be pure and innocent, yet bears the weight of socially conditioning from birth our understanding of ourselves and others.
In my attempt to recreate a fantasy, this work weaves together fragments of images and text to examine the notion of biological determinism or the lack thereof.
In a world entangled in rigid paradigms, do we find ourselves adrift without our inherent discernment? Has our perception of self become a mirage, elusive and ever-shifting? And in this process, have we unwittingly surrendered the ability to determine our position and worth? Amidst the categorical impositions that saturate our contemporary existence, can we dare to transcend, aspiring towards a realm of post-humanism? To rise above the limitations and forge new paths of understanding and being?
